[Quotes] Warcross - Marie Lu | Parte 1

There is a familiar desperation in me, a rising panic that beats loudly in my chest, pounding out each thing I owe. The numbers in my head start over again. Rent, food, bills, debt.

Death has a terrible habit of cutting straight through every careful line you’ve drawn between your present and your future. The line that leads to your dad filling your dorm room with flowers on your graduation day. To him designing your wedding dress. To him coming over for dinner at your future house every Sunday, where his off-key singing would make you laugh so hard you’d cry. I had a hundred thousand of these lines, and in one day they were severed, leaving me with nothing but a stack of his medical bills and gambling debt. Death didn’t even give me somewhere to direct my anger.

Every locked door has a key.

Every problem has a solution.

Sometimes, people kick you to the ground at recess because they think the shape of your eyes is funny. They lunge at you because they see a vulnerable body. Or a different skin color. Or a difficult name. They think that you won’t hit back—that you’ll just lower your eyes and hide. And sometimes, to protect yourself, to make it go away, you do.

But sometimes, you find yourself standing in exactly the right position, wielding exactly the right weapon to hit back. So I hit. I hit fast and hard and furious. I hit with nothing but the language whispered between circuits and wire, the language that can bring people to their knees.

And in spite of everything, I’d do it all over again.

“Everything’s science fiction until someone makes it science fact,” Hideo says. There’s a specific intensity in his gaze now, a glow that brightens his entire expression.

He turns his eyes down, and his lashes catch the light. A smile lingers on his lips. I’d like to kiss you right now.

What if I didn’t let you? I tease.

You wound me, Emika.

I laugh. Maybe I want to kiss someone else.

Jealousy flashes across his face, and his eyes darken to cinder. Even through the physical distance between us, I can sense his emotions through our Link, that deliciously warm desire. Come over. Tonight.

My stomach flutters. But, my teammates . . .

I’ll make it worth your time."

I close my eyes, my lips parted, and soak in the warmth of his arms wrapped around me, his kisses trailing along my damp skin. The rough scars of his knuckles brush past my waist as his hands pull me close. There is a shyness in his eyes now that makes him look so young, an expression that tugs my heart closer to him. I can’t remember when we start kissing or when we stop, or when he leans against me, made weak, whispering my name. We seem to exist in a fog of heat and dusk, and I don’t know where the time goes, but it seems that night falls in the blink of an eye, and soon the evening has swallowed us.

“I don’t talk about him, Emika,” Hideo says after another silence. He looks away again. “I haven’t talked about him in years.”

This is Hideo stripped of his fortune and fame and genius. This is him as a boy, waiting every day for his brother to come back, falling asleep every night to the same nightmare, trapped forever wondering if he had only done one thing, anything, differently. It is hard to describe loss to someone who has never experienced it, impossible to explain all the ways it changes you. But for those who have, not a single word is needed."

“I wanted to do something for you, for a change.” He looks expectantly at me. “Do you like it?”

Suede gift boxes holding fifteen-thousand-dollar electric skateboards. Flights on private jets. Closets full of expensive clothes. Dinners at restaurants he owns. And yet, none of that has made my heart skip like this earnest, hopeful look on his face as he waits to hear if I enjoyed the food he made for me.

When you refuse to ask for help, it tells others that they also shouldn’t ask for help from you. That you look down on them for needing your help. That you like feeling superior to them.

"You’re done!” I shout at him. “And so is your plan.”

Something about my words seems to surprise Zero. “You don’t know.”

Don’t know? Know what?

He straightens. “My plan,” he says, “was to stop Hideo.”

“How is your artificial intelligence capable of judging everyone in the world, or understanding why they do what they do? How do you know you won’t go too far? You aren’t going to bring about world peace all by yourself.”

“Everyone pays lip service to world peace,” Hideo says. “They use it as a pretty answer to pointless questions, to make themselves sound good.” His eyes sear me to the core. “I’m tired of the horror in the world. So I will force it to end.”

[Quotes] Nyx - Serena Akeroyd | Parte 1

Nothing and no one meant more to me than these bastards, and I showed that by keeping them all safe.

It pissed me off that I recognized the voice period. And it pissed me off even more that a quick glimpse of him over my shoulder, scowling and grumpy but still so goddamn pretty, made butterflies take root in my stomach.

I didn’t get butterflies over anything. Not a job interview, and certainly not over something with a dick.

“You got something to say, Nyxy?”

“Yeah.”

“What?” I prompted when he didn’t say another word.

“It’s Nyx.”

“Only people you’ve fucked can call you that, huh?”

He smirked. “Wouldn’t you like to know?”

“Actually, I’m fine as I am.”

She didn’t need me to protect her.

And fuck if that didn’t make me want to protect her more.

“I didn’t mean to hurt you,” he blurted out. “I was only commenting on the fact your attitude is bigger than your—”

“Don’t you dare say my boobs,” I hissed.

“Do I look like I have a death wish?” he grumbled. “Look, can we not focus on your breasts?”

That had me blinking, because whatever word I expected him to say, that wasn’t it.

Hooters? Sure. Melons? Maybe. Breasts? Nah.

Even killers had hearts.

Not big ones, maybe, but mine was there. Still beating away.

Still waiting...

What was it about her?

What was it about us when we were together?

Sniping and snarling like two pissed off cats sharing the same bag, and yet, when it boiled down to it, capable of sitting here in silence and just being.

“This is a mistake.”

“All the best things in life are.”

I blinked at that, as well as the resolve that told me he meant every word. Looking into those deep eyes, I murmured, “Kiss me?”

“I thought you’d never ask.”

Sometimes, the heart knew what the heart wanted, and the brain knew the heart was fucking stupid.

I wondered if she knew how at the very center of my focus she was.

At that moment, all I could see, hear, and breathe was her.

She was weird, but I liked that. It was what had my dick twisted into a knot, after all.

Fuck, I wanted her to know everything. The good, the bad, the goddamn ugly.

[Quotes] Mi Name Is Pink - Veronica Lancet | Parte 1

"What are you looking at?" He persists, so I say the only thing that's on my mind.

"Him. I want him." I don't know who he is, but I know one thing.

He is mine.

And I'll do whatever it takes to make him mine.

Hazel eyes that sparkle with warmth draw me in, holding me captive. It's not only that he's attractive, with his short dark hair and his full, kissable lips. No, it's more than that. In his eyes, I see something I lack—empathy. I see everything I want to be, but cannot.

I bet he goes for the shy, simpering type. The moment I think of him with another woman, a red haze covers my eyes. No... that can't happen. But I'm also smart enough to know he wouldn't be interested in someone like me.

I need to change strategies—learn his habits and preferences and make myself the woman of his dreams. All while keeping all competition away from him.

My plan can't be completed overnight. I will probably need time to create another persona, and to infiltrate his world so seamlessly he won't ever suspect a thing.

Because I don't just want him.

I want to keep him.

Forever.

"There's only one man I want, and I need to be the best at sex so I can blow his mind. Then he'll fall madly in love with me and we'll live happily ever after." My soliloquy finished; I breathe out a dreamy smile.

My first kiss, and it's not gentle or tentative. No, it's a full on parrying of tongues and mashing of mouths. I revel in the sensation of having him inside of me, of finally becoming one.

Because he is mine. He just doesn't know it yet.

I'm becoming greedier. Once a week is no longer enough. Just like my coke addiction got out of control, so did my yearning for him. I want him with a passion so strong, I'd kill anyone who dared interfere. I long for him and even sleep eludes me when he's not around — ok, maybe the coke has something to do with that too. That doesn't change the fact that I need more.

I want to own him.

I sigh just thinking about it. How it would feel to be myself with Theo, for us to be a team — us against the world. The sad thing is that I know that will never happen. Knowing his obsession with justice, I'm well aware he would never accept a vigilante like me. Hell, who am I even kidding, a killer like me?

"You like me?" I must sound like a broken record, but I need him to spell it out for me so I can throw an inner party and finally plan our future wedding.

[Quotes] Doll Face - Sadie Grubor | Parte 2

My normality, any control I thought I had, disappeared with Mei. Once my citadel, the penthouse is now a haunting reminder of her. And even considering returning to the estate makes the creature flare to life, but not in anxious anticipation as before. No, now the place I used to indulge my darkest urges, where many suffered at the edge of my blade, has become a taunting reminder. Because my deadly beautiful doll isn't there.

Glancing at myself in the mirror, my reflection knowingly mocks me with reminders of who and what I really am.

A monster wrapped in a cute package.

"Don't you see," I cry, gripping the gun tighter. "There were never monsters under my bed." A solo tear slips over my blood-stained face. "No, they stood in bright daylight. They sat at the dinner table, tucked you into bed, called you daughter." Curling the right side of my mouth, I snort. "They dress you up, call you their doll, and make you think that shit is normal," I shout, holding the gun steadily on his chest.

[Quotes] Doll Face - Sadie Grubor | Parte 1

"If I've learned anything in my short time here, it's that there are far more dark kings than white knights. It's up to you to save yourself, and sometimes, that's by any means necessary."

Can I really put my trust in a criminal? Is my only saving grace in those who lie, cheat, steal, and kill?

Hell, are you really any better than them?

Closing my eyes, I inhale deeply. Opening my eyes on a slow exhale, I silently answer my own question.

No. You're worse. You're a monster born from the darkest evil and shaped by sin.

The moment he spoke, my control was gone. The instant he touched me, my inhibitions disappeared. When the switchblade pressed against my skin, want grew into need. My darkest desires rose up in reverence, spilling over as easily as the blood from our split skin.

"Christ," Sketch voices his disbelief. "Who the fuck are you?"

At his question, I meet his eyes. "No one. I'm absolutely no one."

The words are so true, more honest than I ever realized. For a moment, a long lost part of me – the real me – screams to be set free.

Holding me the way he wants, he claims my mouth just the way I need him to. The kiss is every bit a possession of my body. The edges of his darkness dance across my skin, wrapping around my limbs, drawing out the depravity I lock away.

"You will never be free," he pauses, bringing his face closer to mine, "of me."

The words, his promise, should terrify me, but they don't, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's the way he's chipping away at my façade. Maybe it's that he's glimpsed the dark urges, the evil, inside me, and still desires more. No, he commands more.

"I've glimpsed your darkness," I whisper, feeling her body tense, "and it's fucking beautiful."

Both of his hands move to palm the sides of my face, his forehead pressing to mine.

"The ground will be littered with the bodies of those who have and would hurt you," he vows. "I will lay each one at your feet and carve your name into their flesh as a reminder to others."

"I've spent my life making sure no one owns me," he declares, squeezing me tighter. "Until you. You've seen the ugliness, danced with my demons, and you didn't run."

"I don't care about your sins," he says, "I have my own." His fingers flex against my scalp. "And quite honestly, I need your soul to be as dark and corrupted," he confesses. "It's the only way mine won't destroy you. I can't destroy you."

[Quotes] Tramp - Mary Elizabeth | Parte 2

I love to fuck this man, but the way he stares at me with deep-rooted intensity makes me want to use my words instead of my body. If he swears never to stop regarding me with such desire, I’ll recite the whole damn alphabet.

I’ll prepare a fucking speech.

“Can we stay like this forever?” I ask, laying my cheek against his heartbeat to absorb the steady thud.

“No,” Talent answers. “I have so much more planned for us, baby.”

He was right. We are the same.

Born into lives we didn’t ask for, we’re neither good nor bad. We’ve taken what was given to us and we’ve made the most out of it.

I’m a tramp, and he’s a criminal.

Maybe fate isn’t as cruel as I thought. It brought us together, after all.

[Quotes] Tramp - Mary Elizabeth | Parte 1

I learned at a young age that looks are everything.

Nothing in this world is out of reach for the simple fact that I was born a woman, blessed with an attractive face. My childhood was spent studying how valuable the female body is, admiring its ability to drop men to their knees in worship by simply existing.

In another life, I might’ve sat on his couch as a patient to confess the trauma I’ve survived. But in this life, I sit on his face and lie about how good he makes me feel. Little does he know, there’s nothing to feel at all.

From top to bottom, unease melts away from my body with indecision and mistrust, and I’m an empty vessel with one goal in mind: money.

I was born for this shit.

“Who are you?” Talent asks again. He licks his bottom lip, sitting back in his seat as I approach.

“Your wildest dreams,” I say.

Fuck Talent Ridge.

An heir with a silver spoon in his mouth doesn’t get to judge me because I was damned with a shitty stack of cards at birth.

“I can’t stop thinking about you,” Talent admits.

“Two thousand an hour,” I reply without skipping a beat.

Talent doesn’t insult me by looking shocked. “Is that the going rate these days?”

“Three thousand because you’re a smartass.”

Whisky tastes better on his lips than it does coming out of a glass. I decide it’s the only way I’m going to taste it for the rest of the night. Anything else is a sad comparison.

Passion is painfully beautiful.

Amazingly awful.

A loud whisper.

“Quit trying to say goodbye to me, Lydia,” Talent says. He covers my hand with his. “It’s too late for that now.”

“You don’t know what you’re asking for,” I whisper.

He lowers my hand from his face to his heart, where it beats as heavily as mine. “The only thing I’m asking for is you. The rest will fall into place, or it won’t. I don’t care. Nothing else matters to me.”

It’s hard being a woman.

Beauty opens doors.

Be happy. Smile more. Influence.

But don’t overdo it.

The female body is desirable, but don’t show too much skin because that’s dishonorable.

Be sexy, but don’t be sexual.

But don’t dress like a nun either because that’s weird.

Fuck it all.

[Quotes] Mad As A Hatter - Kendra Moreno | Parte 2

The Hatter doesn’t seem to trust anyone, not even himself. And here he is, trusting me.

“Don’t cry for me, Clara Bee,” he whispers softly. “I don’t think I can bear it.”

“I’m sorry.” I lift my hand to wipe away the tear, embarrassed that I’m losing it.

He catches my hand in his own before I manage the task. His eyes are filled with emotion as he leans forward and kisses the droplet away, his lips soft against my skin. It’s enough to choke me up again, but I fight against it. It feels like a losing battle.

“Never be sorry.” He looks into my eyes. “Not for me. Our world is in chaos, every one of us suffers in some way. My mind,” he taps the side of his head, “is where I suffer. Inside my thoughts, there’s chaos, insanity, fear. I cannot fight it. I cannot push it away. But inside all that chaos, there’s you, shining bright, my own star to light the way and show me the path home. Never be sorry for who you are,” he says, more serious than I have ever seen him. “Because who you are is everything to me.”

We might be prophesied to be together, but a prophecy didn’t make me love the Hatter. The man in a coat and a top hat did that all on his own.

The man behind the madness is so much more than his insanity. He is so much more than he appears, than he thinks.

Wonderland is curious. It’s inhabitants are curious. But the Hatter? The Hatter is a puzzle I keep trying to piece together, only to realize none of the pieces are from the same puzzle. He makes me burn, makes me love, makes me whole. I have to tell him that. I have to show him what he’s beginning to mean to me. He is enough. He’s enough exactly how he is, insanity and all.

“What are you doing?” I ask, frowning at the loss of his weight.

His eyes trail over me, his angle letting him see everything, letting him see me laid out on the table.

“Admiring the view,” he replies, grinning. “If only tea time was this beautiful.” I blush, laying my head back down. “Look at you,” he continues, “all spread out in front of me like a feast.”

“Last chance, Clara Bee,” he says, his eyes heated as they trace my body. “If we do this, I’ll never get enough of you.”

“Don’t stop,” I whisper, meeting his eyes. “Give me everything.”

He growls. “You don’t want everything.”

“I do.” Our eyes stay locked. “I want everything you have to give. Hold nothing back.”

I make my own destiny, but sometimes, it’s okay to be happy with someone that falls into your life. Or the other way around, in this instance. Sometimes, Fate knows what it’s doing.

And that person that enters your orbit? Well, they might just be the love of your life, after all. Even if they’re a tiny bit mad.

I’m going to keep fighting for Wonderland’s freedom. I won’t stop fighting the Red Queen. Not until it’s my turn to cross into the Hereafter. And even then, I’ll have my Hatter beside me.

“You are the most beautiful thing I have ever seen,” Hatter reiterates. “Beautiful enough to be my queen.”

[Quotes] Mad As A Hatter - Kendra Moreno | Parte 1

This is a game, nothing more. I’m the mouse, but who is the cat?

“Rule Number one: Don’t drink the tea here unless you trust the person giving it to you.”

“How do I know who to trust?” I ask, moving further away from the table. It gives me the creeps.

“You don’t.” An ominous smile spreads across his face. “Rule number two: Trust no one.”

“Is this like the house from Hansel and Gretel?” I whisper. I don’t know why I do. “Leading children inside, so they can be eaten?”

White laughs and shakes his head.

“The witch would be safer than the Hatter. At least with her, you know what to expect.”

“So, I can trust you?” I ask, hesitantly.

His eyes sparkle as the smile spreads across his face.

“No,” he says. “Trust no one in Wonderland. Not even yourself.”

“Where are they going?” I ask White as I lean to the side to try and get a better look. There’s a bright flash, but that’s all I can make out. The growth is too thick, forming a wall between us and them.

“The Hatter’s tea party is the last stop before the Hereafter,” White answers, sadness on his face. “Hatter sits with them all.”

“Those people were dead?” Surprise catches me off guard. I had been sitting with dead people, and I hadn’t even known it. “They didn’t look dead.”

“They look more alive than when they were living.” He meets my stare. “We shed our misery when we die. And the Hatter,” he pauses, his eyes haunted. “The Hatter sees us in both skins.”

“Do I need to protect myself against you?” I tilt my head slightly, considering his question.

He stops a few feet in front of me, his arms relaxed by his sides.

“You need to protect yourself against everything in Wonderland,” he replies. “Especially me.”

“She must lose her heart while taking a stand

To the first son of Wonderland.”

Eliminate all the illogical possibilities and you’re left with the only logical one, right? One, I’m in Wonderland. Two, I’m in the Mad Hatter’s house. Three, there’s a prophecy written that includes me helping take down the Red Queen. Four, I am not crazy.

“You’re beautiful.” The Hatter smiles with the words, and I suddenly feel as beautiful as he sees me. I feel like I can take on the world at this very moment and win.

I glance back at Hatter, grinning. He’s still standing on the edge, a soft smile on his face. “What?”

“I like when you do that,” he replies softly, his fingers gently squeezing mine.

“Do what?” I’m genuinely confused. I hadn’t done anything out of the ordinary.

“Embrace my madness.”
